An overview of the Del Mar Fair's history

The Del Mar Fair has been taking place in San Diego since the 1880s! A county fair started as an agricultural festival like most in the United States. Contests like pie baking, fruit and vegetable tasting, and horse races were held in the community. In 1936, the Del Mar Fairgrounds opened after a series of moves. A 370-acre beachfront property was purchased by the 22nd District Agricultural Association in 1989, making San Diego's County Fair its permanent location. Despite WWII and the Covid19 pandemic, the fair has been held every year in San Diego except for 1917-18 and 2020. In 2021, an earlier version of the fair was held, and in 2022, the full-scale event was held.

Over the years, the name of the fair has changed numerous times. As early as the 1950s, the fair was renamed Southern California Exposition and San Diego County Fair. This event was officially renamed the Del Mar Fair in the 1980s. Despite being renamed San Diego County Fair in 2002, most locals still refer to it as Del Mar Fair. Please don't get confused if you hear the names San Diego County Fair and Del Mar Fair!
